Our beloved Robert D. Gal passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on December 19th, 2015. Bob was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 17th, 1934 and moved to San Diego, California at age 13. While in school Bob earned the nickname “Rabbit” and graduated from Hoover High in 1952. In 1956 he graduated from San Diego State University as an Air Force 2nd lieutenant with a degree in accounting. He went on to serve in Korea for 11 months.
Bob met Maryrose Pilawa while stationed in Rome, New York. They married on January 23rd, 1960 and began their life together in San Diego. He held various accounting positions after his service as an Air Force captain, ultimately retiring as CFO for WD-40 in 1997.
Bob embraced his retirement. With Maryrose by his side, they travelled to four continents. He relished in researching each destination and made fast friends with the local people. His passions included deep-sea fishing, photography, gardening, and reading.
Bob’s greatest delight was his family. He loved telling stories and could weave many a tall tale. His quick wit and vast knowledge kept his listeners mirthfully entertained.
Bob and Maryrose raised three children: Susan, David, and Elaine. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren: Emilee, Andrew, Anthony, and AnnMarie.
Bob Gal will forever be remembered as an officer and a gentleman with a bottomless sense of humor.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Therese Parish on January 23rd, 2016.
