Robert E. Morrison, Sr., Physicist, Dies at 88
Robert (Bob) Eugene Morrison, Sr., PhD, 88, of El Cajon, CA left this earth to be with Jesus on December 5. He is most remembered as a devoted husband, involved dad, a lover of all things academic, but most of all as a man of deep devotion to Jesus Christ.
Dr. Morrison had a distinguished career as a physicist and top researcher for the Congressional Research Service (CRS) in Washington, D.C. Throughout his career, Dr. Morrison pursued education for himself, encouraged his children in their educational pursuits, and taught at the graduate level and in the church setting. He held degrees in physics, education, mathematics, history, political science, English, theology, and a PhD in physical oceanography. He was a graduate of Wheaton College, in Wheaton, Ill., Columbia University, University of Maryland, Chesapeake Theological Seminary, and New York University.
Early in his career as a physical oceanographer, Dr. Morrison researched anti-submarine warfare as a civilian employee for the U.S. Navy. He later worked for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration as a specialist on ocean tides, and he completed his U.S. government career with the Congressional Research Service in the Science Policy Division as a top expert in meteorology and oceanography. Two key areas of research at the CRS included weather modification and the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
After retirement from the CRS, Dr. Morrison served in administration and development for Chesapeake Theological Seminary located in the Baltimore area. Dr. Morrison, together with his wife, Kathryn, then spent two years as missionaries in Taiwan teaching English to students at Christ’s College in Taipei before moving to the San Diego area.
Most notable about Dr. Morrison’s life was his deep commitment to his Christian faith. He prayed daily, studied the Bible daily and trusted God and his Savior Jesus for all things. He was a member of the Living Faith Community Christian Reformed Church in San Diego since 2002 and he previously served in leadership and teaching roles in the Presbyterian Church of America and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Morrison was born to John and Anna Morrison (May 17, 1930) in Steelton, Pa. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kathryn Marie, his five children Pamela Ann of Seaside, Ore, Gail Elizabeth of La Mesa, Calif., Robert Morrison, Jr. of New Albany, Ohio, Carol Marie of Baltimore, Md., and Joanne Estelle of Silver Spring, Md. He has twelve grandchildren: Adria, Peter, Suzannah, Richard, Robert III, Sam, Hannah, Andrew, Jonathan, Benjamin, Will, and Jack. Dr. Morrison is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and his nephews Richard, who resides in Harrisburg, Pa., and Robert and William who reside in Suffolk County, NY. His death was preceded by his sister Anna, who resided in New York and his brother Charles, who resided in Harrisburg, Pa.
To our beloved husband, dad, grandpa and uncle, we will miss you and never forget you.
A memorial service will be held on Dec. 27 at 11:00 am at Living Faith Community Church, San Diego. Dr. Morrison was a longtime supporter of the San Diego Rescue Mission, and donations can be made in his honor.
