Robert Nathaniel Newsom passed away peacefully Monday, September 7 at the age of 84. Bob is survived by his wife Mary Lou, daughter Lynn, son Tom and four grandchildren. Mary Lou and Bob were married more than 61 years.
Bob was born and raised in Michigan where he met Mary Lou while they were in High School. They were married after he earned his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering in 1954 from the University of Michigan. He went on to earn his Master degree a year later. Bob served in the Army for two years as an instructor at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland before returning to Commonwealth Associates, a consulting firm located in Jackson Michigan. In 1971 he was offed a position at SDG&E and moved his family to El Cajon. Bob retired from SDG&E in 1994.
Bob and Mary Lou didn’t slow down after retirement spending time snow skiing, sailing, traveling and volunteering at their church, the Community Concert Association, Bob serving as President. Bob spent 16 years volunteering his time as an arbitrator at the Better Business Bureau and was the church liaison, overseeing three building projects at the First United Methodist Church and served as President of the Board of Trustees. He was also an active member in the San Diego Garden Railroad Club and the United Sates Power Squadron.
He was a gentle gentleman who was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cared deeply for his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 Sunday, October 4th at the First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. If you choose to honor Bob’s memory you may donate to the church’s general fund.
