At the age of 17, Rui embarked on his journey to the United States, driven by his courageous spirit and determination. His early years were devoted to the tuna fishing industry, where he honed his skills and ultimately discovered his true passion as a Navigator aboard several commercial vessels. Rui's professional journey reflected his unwavering dedication to his work and the sea. After his retirement from tuna fishing, Rui sought to remain engaged and found a new calling at Sea World San Diego. His contributions were recognized through numerous honors, showcasing his commitment and love for his work environment.
Rui was immensely proud of his heritage and his remarkable immigration story to America. He often expressed how only in this great country could someone arrive with nothing and build a home and family. He met his wife Merita, was married and had 5 children together. They settled in Point Loma and were active members in the Portuguese American Community. Rui was involved in the UPSES, Festa do Santo Amaro, and was a lifelong parishioner at St. Agnes Catholic Chruch. Despite spending much of his time at sea during the formative years of his children, he cherished the moments with his grandchildren in his later years, valuing the bonds and shared memories.
Educated at the Licieu Nacional in Funchal Madeira, Rui carried a strong intellectual curiosity into his later life. An avid reader and devoted fan of the San Diego Padres, Rui passionately kept up with sports and immersed himself in the daily newspaper, maintaining a lively interest in the world around him.
Rui leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Merita P. Goncalves, and their children: Ruijames Goncalves, Raymond Goncalves, Rebecca Goncalves McMullan and Regina Goncalves Paine.
