Shirley Etue, 82, of El Cajon, California died on Wednesday July 9th, 2014. She was born November 20th, 1931 in Bennington, Vermont to Charles and Irene (Smith) LaBatt. She was raised in Arlington alongside her siblings Earl, Nancy, and Edward. After graduating Arlington High School in 1949, Shirley attended Albany Business School from 1949 to 1951. During that time she met her husband, Charles Etue. They were married
on September 17th, 1955.
Shirley spent some time in Germany while her husband was stationed in the army there. Afterwards, they settled in El Cajon, California to raise their three sons Michael, David, and Matthew. She worked at Grossmont Work Training Center for Special Education Children for many years. She spent her time enjoying arts and crafts, spending summers at the pool, avidly supporting the Padres and Chargers games, trying her luck on the California lottery scratchers, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren, Nicholas Etue and Brooke Etue. She was especially skilled in knitting, sewing, and scrapbooking and made hand-sewn costumes and clothes for her grandchildren, picture collages of family and friends, and other beautiful keepsakes.
All that knew her will miss her gentle, kind, and generous spirit. Shirley Etue is survived by her sons Michael Etue, David Etue, and Matthew Etue, (wife Tina Etue), grandchildren Nicholas Etue and Brooke Etue all of El Cajon, California as well as her brother Earl LaBatt (wife Jacqueline LaBatt), sister Nancy Hoffman (husband Clifford Hoffman), of Arlington, Vermont, sister-in-law Georgia LaBatt of Danby, and many nieces and nephews.She is predeceased by her parents Charles LaBatt and Irene (Smith) LaBatt of Arlington Vermont, husband Charles Etue of El Cajon and brother Edward LaBatt of Danby Vermont.
