Stephen Wayne Garner, age 77, died of complications from a brain tumor on February 22, 2024, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
Steve is survived by his wife, Connie; his children Stephen and Pamela Garner of Lakeside and Traci and Damon Lomelo, of La Mesa; five grandchildren Claire Garner, Cade Garner, Lily Lomelo, Joseph Lomelo and Charlie Lomelo; his sister Carol Boerner, of Imperial; his brothers Frank Garner, Marlin Jennings and Ryan Jennings, of Oregon, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rogene Fry Jennings and Franklin Garner; and his brother David Garner.
Steve was born on September 21, 1946 in Wichita, KS. His family moved to Imperial in 1962 and he graduated from Imperial High School in 1964. In 1966 he was inducted into the Army and served in Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1968 he attended Imperial Valley College. In 1985, he moved his family from Imperial to the San Diego area due to a job transfer with AT&T. He retired as an Outside Plant Engineer with AT&T and Pacific Bell, where he enjoyed working for more than 30 years.
Steve was a great family man and a loving father and son. He married Connie Jaime in 1968 and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Steve was a very social, active man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of American Legion Post 282 and parishioner of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. During his time in Imperial he was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and an active member of the local Lions Club. He enjoyed entertaining, cooking, bike riding, and DIY projects around his home and that of his family members’ homes. His family and friends will always remember him as an exceptional man and great mentor to his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Rosary, Mass and military funeral is scheduled on Tuesday, March 12, beginning at 10:15 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 7710 El Cajon Blvd., La Mesa and burial at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego.
