Steven Glenn Muetzel was born on August 5th, 1951 to Harold Glenn muetzel and Bethel Vorintha Muetzel in Redwood Falls, MN. Steve grew up in Sioux Falls, SD with two younger sisters, Deborah Vander Woude and Nadine Sierakowski. His parents raised Steve and his siblings along with two cousins, Dee Smith and Dianna Kragerud. His childhood home also overflowed with numerous foreign exchange students that were warmly welcomed into the family. His father, Glenn, had a great fondness for horses, and it quickly became his own. Steve owned several of them throughout the years and competed in a number of “Ride and Tie” sporting events that combined trail running, endurance horseback riding, and strategy. This unique race attested to his mental toughness and spirit of adventure.
Steve graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD in 1969. He then attended South Dakota State University graduating with a major in biology. After college he lived in three different places working as a clinical research associate in pharmaceutical drug development. His first stop was Kalamazoo, Michigan and then on to Raleigh, NC where he completed his Masters at Duke University in zoology. He spent 14 years there working for Burroughs Welcome in the Research Triangle. Steve then settled in San Diego, CA where he purchased his first and current home. San Diego offered the opportunity for him to work for several different pharmaceutical companies both large and small. In August 2012, he took the jump to work for himself as a independent clinical research consultant.
It didn’t take long for Steve to quickly became a true Californian, intensely disliking any weather below 65 degrees Fahrenheit and diving into the diverse coastal cuisine. Steve’s love for art, culture and travel never faded, and he loved to share his passions with those closest to him. Steve had two standard poodles, Winston and Delta, as well as a Siamese cat, Beatrice, now all of which have passed. Steve was loved by many and will be missed by more.
