Susan Gertrude Brown

Susan Gertrude Walsh Brown (Sue Brown), age 89, of La Mesa, California passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023. She was born November 4, 1933 in Tyre (Ubly), Michigan the daughter of Susan and Walter Walsh. She was one of eleven children.

Sue first came to San Diego in 1952 and lived in Old Town. She worked with physical therapy patients at Scripps Mercy Hospital, a facility operated by nuns. She continued to work there until her brother Louie called her to be in his wedding in Michigan. She was dearly missed by her boss, one of the nuns. She married Harold “Jay” Brown in Pontiac, Michigan on November 30, 1957. They moved back to San Diego and she went back to work at Scripps Mercy Hospital until her daughter was born. Sue then worked at the San Diego Blood bank until she retired after 29 years! As a die hard fan of the Padres, Sue played softball when she was young and would go on to coach later in life. She enjoyed playing a variety of other sports with her friends including golf, bowling, and volleyball. When she wasn’t playing sports, she was in the garden and tending to her beautiful yard. She was always the one taking the pictures. She loved music, we had music on all the time like Dolly Parton, John Denver, Elvis, Polka etc...  A dedicated church-goer, she attended Saint Martin’s every Sunday until her health declined. She was strong willed and never had a mean thing to say about anyone. She will be sorely missed.

Sue is survived by her brother W. Joseph and Patricia Walsh of Ubly, sister-in-law Rosalie Walsh of Ubly, her daughter Teresa “Teri” of San Diego and her grandchildren Kevin and Jonathan Hoffman of San Diego, Darrell Jay aka D.J. Hoffman and his wife, Tiffany Hoffman of Oregon.  Sue was predeceased by her father Walter Walsh, mother Susan Walsh, Brother Leo (Lee) and Rita Walsh, Sister Beatrice and Joe Bauman, Brother Michael and Donna Walsh, Sister Lila and Grant Lamphere, Brother Raymond and Louise Walsh, Brother Maurice and Geri Walsh, Brother Pete and Delores Walsh, Brother Louis (Louie) Walsh and Brother Daniel and Shirley Walsh.

Funeral service is Saturday November 4, 2023 at 10:00am located at Saint Martin’s of Tours Catholic Church in La Mesa, California (7710 El Cajon Blvd). There will be a reception following the service in the back room at Marie Callender's (6950 Alvarado Rd. San Diego, CA 92120 ). Inurnment of the urn will be with her husband, Monday, November 6, 2023 at 9:30am located at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery (1700 Cabrillo Memorial Dr., San Diego, CA 92106, Section CBAA Row 2) (family only)
