Tommy was born in La Mesa, California and has lived in the San Diego area most his life. As a child, Tommy participated in sports, surfing, snowboarding and enjoyed his time with friends and family. Tommy was a fun loving, generous individual who would give the shirt off his back if you asked. Tommy had a quick wit and would amuse his spectators with jokes and laughter. Tommy worked as a Veterinary Technician because he loved animals. Due to this Tommy rescued his dog Milo which was his new best friend.
Tommy moved to Palm Springs and started a new job in 2010. Shortly after arriving in Palm Springs he was involved in a motor vehicle accident which he sustained a traumatic brain injury. The doctors believed Tommy would not survive from his injuries. Seven months later Tommy awakened from his coma and was responding. Although Tommy sustained a traumatic brain injury, a stroke and was unable to speak; his mind was sharp and he desired to live a productive life.
Tommy attended physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy via the SHARP Rehabilitation program and SDSU. Tommy learned to communicate using sign language and other devices. Tommy gained his strength which allowed him to participate in outdoor activities. Tommy spent time using disabled alternatives which allowed him to kayak, sail and surf.
Tommy had a desire to walk again and continued to improve with his recovery and surprised his therapists. Due to Tommy’s charming personality he was able to gain extra support from all his therapists who would work extra hard for Tommy. Tommy enjoyed going to the movies, going to restaurants, going to the beach and visiting with family and friends. Unexpectedly, Tommy left this earth due to complications from the original traumatic brain injury.
Tommy is survived by his Mother and Step-Father Vicki and Dane Wiesner. Sister and Brother-in-Law Sheree and Kimo Henson. God Mother Zoe Gardner. Father and Step-Mother, Joel and Mary Johnson. Maternal Grandmother, Patricia Banning. Paternal Grandfather, Lee Johnson. Nephews Hunter and Kayden Henson. And multiple friends including close friends, Mark Casey and Angelica Parra.
A celebration of Tommy’s life will be held at the Rock Church (808 Jackman Street El Cajon, CA 92020) on April 24th 2015 at 11:00 AM. Following the service Tommy’s internment will be held as Singing Hills Memorial Park (2800 Dehesa Rd, El Cajon, CA 92019). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation (WWW.SDBIF.ORG ).
