Monsignor Thomas Prendergast August 11, 1931 - April 14, 2016 San Diego Rev. Monsignor Thomas Prendergast, aged 84, retired pastor of California's first mission, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcal, died peacefully in the loving care of the staff at Nazareth House, San Diego, on April 14, 2016. He was born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1931. He was ordained a priest in 1956 at St. Mary's Seminary, Kilkenny. He came to the Diocese of San Diego the same year and served in numerous parishes over his 59 years as priest. His pastoral assignments included St. Thomas Indian Mission, Fort Yuma; St. Joseph, Big Bear Lake; Immaculate Conception, Old Town; Santa Sophia, Spring Valley; and Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcal. Msgr. Prendergast was a much loved pastor and earned the respect of his bishops and brother priests, being named a monsignor in 1976 by the late Bishop Leo T. Maher. He is survived by his brother, Jim, Dublin; sister, Mary O'Connor, Cork; sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews in Ireland, California, New Zealand and Australia. The Vigil will take place on Thursday, April 21, 6:30 pm, and the Funeral Mass on Friday, April 22, 10:30 am, both at Our Mother of Confidence Church, 3131 Governor Dr., University City.
