Thomas E. Schuettge passed away on Wednesday April 6, 2016 at the age of 95.
Born in Chicago, he met his wife Naomi Moritz Schuettge in high school and they were married for 72 years. In 1963, they moved with their family from Chicago to San Diego and they lived in El Cajon, Hillcrest and, for the past nine years, at Wesley Palms retirement community.
In high school, Tom was the Illinois State Champion in rudimental drumming and ran track where he gained the life-long nickname “Shut Put.” He began his career as a salesman with the Hammond Organ Company in Chicago, owned music stories selling Hammond Organs in Green Bay and Appleton, Wisconsin, and in San Diego he worked as an Account Executive with specialty advertising. He and Naomi were active members at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral and he held a number of lay leadership positions as head usher and as a member of the Cathedral Vestry. Through his involvement with St. Paul’s, he was also involved in the Episcopal mission of working with homeless families in downtown San Diego.
Tom had a great sense of humor, and was a generous friend, father and husband. He was gregarious, lighting up a room with his presence. In addition to his wife Naomi, he is survived by his son Tim Schuettge and his wife Karen Gould of Boston, MA; his daughter Peggy Ann Booth and her husband Jim Booth of Hershey, PA; his granddaughter Kimberly Sullivan and her husband John Sullivan of Churchville, PA; his granddaughter Anna Schuettge and her fiancé Michael Friedman of Washington, DC and his grandson Noah Schuettge of Cambridge, MA; and his great-grandchildren Megan, Hannah and Cooper Sullivan. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 21 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Cathedral on 2728 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.
