Trifone “Tony or Nuch” Bruno was born in a house in Logan Heights, San Diego to Pasquale and Maria Bruno on October 23rd, 1936. He was the second son and his brother was Luigi Bruno, who passed away in his early 30’s.
He passed peacefully in the presence of his family on January 6th, 2017 at St. Paul’s John McColl Care center while under the care of Light Bridge Hospice.
Tony married Honora Joan Brecko on February 6th, 1970. They had two children, Theresa Maria Bruno and Anthony John Bruno. Theresa passed in 2016 after a life long illness. Surviving him is his wife and son, daughter in law Elodia Marie Bruno and grandson Anthony Giovanni Bruno.
Tony attended schools in San Diego and graduated from San Diego High School. He also attended San Diego Junior College. Prior to attending Junior College, Tony entered the Army Reserve. While serving in the Army Reserve he became a First Sergeant with the First Gun Battalion and was an expert Sharp Shooter. Later he was put in charge of Artillery and soon was stationed in Death Valley, CA as a Tank Commander.
After the Army Reserve he worked for Ryan Aeronautics’. He was involved in the design and construction of the KC-135 refueling aircraft which are still used today. He was also involved with the design and construction of the U-2 Spy plane during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Because of his skill with reading blueprints he was able to land the job as Head Estimator of Acoustic and Ceramic Tile for Western Tile San Diego. He was involved in the construction of Fashion and Mission Valley malls, The Hilton and Marriot hotels downtown and the upgrades to QUALCOMM Stadium to name a few.
He was an active member of the Catholic Church. He was a member of Cardin Center which was part of the Catholic Church under the leadership of Father Leo Davis. During this time he became close friends with Father Davis and would meet and marry his wife Honora Brecko. Cardijn Center’s main focus was to help the poor and less fortunate. Some of the many things Tony was involved with were the Boycott of Grapes with Cesar Chavez to fight for the rights of migrant workers of that time. Tony always had a heart for those in need and fought for the rights of many people all the way to the end.
After he retired he joined with his wife St. Michaels Choir in Poway, CA. He loved to sing and would sing every chance he had, family dinners, holidays and random times throughout the day. His voice was less than perfect but he sang because of his love for Jesus and that is all that mattered to him and those that loved him.
The family is grateful to Dr. Paul Speckart, Scripps Mercy Hospital, St. Paul’s McColl Care Center, Light Bridge Hospice, St. Michaels Catholic Church, Holy Spirit Catholic Church and all of the wonderful people, nurses, friends and family that had a part of helping and caring for Tony.
The Funeral Mass will be held January 28th, 2017 at St. Michaels Catholic Church at 11:30 am.
