A resident of Mount Helix, WALTER ALBERT SHAFFER JR. was born in Los Angeles. Lived in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Sacramento and Fresno. Moved to San Diego in January 1948 and lived in the county since. Attended Fresno State College of Law. After passing the bar, he continued to work for the State Board of Equalization where he was District Administrator for San Diego and Imperial Counties. He retired from the State in 1988 and continued the practice of law for a few years.
He married Teresa Ann Murphy on July 4, 1951. Survivors include his spouse, 6 children, daugters - Annette El-Hajj(Don), Gerilyn Bollman(Jim), Sharon Wardell(Tom) and sons - Eugene(Mary Lynn), Paul(Deb) and Donald(Niki), 12 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.
He served as president of the Center City Kiwanis Club and for many years was treasurer of the La Mesa Kiwanis.
He served from 1989 as a volunteer tour escort for the San Diego Historical Society tours group, leading all tours all over the U.S. He was board member for the San Diego Historical Society and served as vice president in two different capacities.
He was active in Catholic Church parish activities in various parishes. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Parish.
Donations in lieu of flowers to St. Vincent de Paul Village or Sharp Hospice Care fund.
