Wayne Butt
September 20, 1938 to October 7, 2017
Wayne was born in Buffalo, NY in 1938, one of 3 children of Al & Edna Butt. He is survived by his brother, Gary and sister, Jackie. The family moved to Williamsville, NY in the early 50’s. There he attended Williamsville High School, graduating in 1956. He was a member of the wrestling team and never lost a match. After graduation, he entered the Navy and became a Submarine sailor stationed on the USS Queenfish based in San Diego.
Wayne was blessed with three daughters from a previous marriage, Jennifer, Gretchen, Jackie; one daughter with wife Rosemary Wellington, Chaundra; 9 grandchildren, Mike, Ben, Izzy & Lexi Tronolone; Finn Brand; Robby & Ryan Barnes; Kirsten & Rebecca Maurizi, and a son-in-law, Ron Barnes. He was predeceased by son-in-law, John Tronolone.
After being honorably discharged he returned to Buffalo and worked for the Gas co. for a short time. His best friend, Dick Aquino told him of an opening at United Airlines and so he entered the world of travel. While working at United he and Dick became volunteer firemen serving their communities. While at the Buffalo Airport he met Rosemary.
Motivated by winter, Wayne transferred to San Diego with United in 1968. In 1972, he attained a life-long dream and became a Deputy Sherriff, serving for 20 years.
Here, he spent a career either wrestling with bad guys or crashing into them. To date, he holds the record for the most vehicles damaged (unverified). He served at the county jail, Vista and Lemon Grove Patrol and at Descanso Detention facility. He was a Detective and also worked the gang detail. A fearless, rough and tumble kind of guy, he retired in 1992 after yet another accident. He was a hero to some and a nemesis to others (including management).
Not one to be idle for long, he started bartending at his favorite watering hole and stayed for 20 years. He retired on June 5th of this year, became ill on the 8th, and passed away on Oct. 7th, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
He loved to travel, and anything to do with Greek or Roman History. Thus, he and Rosemary, his wife of over 40 years, would often travel to the area around the Mediterranean. They also made regular trips to nearby casinos doing their part to support the local reservations.
Wayne wholly supported Rosemary’s habit of adopting the craziest, most troublesome dogs she could find. However, he did get to pick the last one, O’Malley, who will greatly miss going on daily walks with his best friend. Wayne’s favorite treat was Milky Way candy bars, which we put out for you to enjoy in his memory today.
Wayne could be found every Sat. night after mass helping Rosemary secure the church, and doing odd jobs at church.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and good friend. His, was a life of service to his country, community and church. He will be greatly missed.
