William James Dust passed away peacefully on March 23, 2021 in his home in San Diego, CA surrounded by his close friends.
William, known affectionately as Bill, was born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA to Dorothy and William Frederick Dust on December 12, 1944. He went to St Augustine High School and graduated in 1962. He then went on to San Diego State University and got his Bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television. Bill was also musically inclined and while at SDSU made extra money giving guitar lessons.
He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Army as a Sergeant, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and was honorably discharged in 1973. Soon thereafter he began his career at Safeway Stores, which later became Vons, working the front office tabulating and balancing the daily sales. After a long career and making many lifelong friends there, he retired from Vons. Never one to sit around he continued working as a Security Guard at the San Diego Sports Arena. During this time he met Billy Joel and Elton John to name just a few stars. He always got a kick out of speaking to the various singers at concerts.
Bill never married but had many friends. He had a passion for old train locomotives and could name each train engine from Santa Fe to Union Pacific and all the various railroad lines servicing points of the United States. He was a true train aficionado.
Bill loved to go to the horse races, play poker and spend time at the Casino and once won $10,000 on a lucky slot machine in Viejas. He loved getting together and was involved in a semi-monthly Scrabble tournament with his friends that went on for over 30 years.
Bill had a fondness for dogs and would rescue strays, usually German Shephards, from the local shelter. He would name each dog Dusty. His last dog, an adorable German Shephard, was named Dusty the 5th.
He loved watching classic movies, specifically old Westerns and then recording them onto his Betamax machine to add to his large video collection. Bill could spend 30 minutes easily explaining the advantages of Betamax over VHS.
Bill was a great friend who was loved by all and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
