William H. (Bill) Moore
Bill was born on Sept 9, 1917, in Port Huron, Michigan, son of Herbert R. Moore and Mary ‘Molly’ (Connors) Moore. Both sides of the family originally came from Ireland – the last to arrive being his grandfather, William Connors and grandmother Mary (Hogan) Connors, both of whom hailed from County Cork, Ireland. The entire family was not only proud of being Irish, they were also grateful for its gifts of humor, Catholicism and music (though not necessarily in that order). Bill’s father, Herb (1891-1970), was a Marine Corps veteran of World War I and a printing pressman by trade. His mother, Molly (1891-1987), in addition to giving birth to their seven children, worked as a laundry maid, a clerk, and a “Rosie the Riveter” assembly line factory worker during the second world war. The Great Depression had a major impact on the family, as it did for most of the families on the east side of Flint, MI where they resided. Bill attended St. Mary’s High School where he played football and basketball and had a love of golf, being a caddie at 14yrs. old.
Bill went to work and attend college and married Helen Dzido prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corp where he became a Second LT. During the war he served as a bombardier and navigator where he was sent to fly the hump over China, Burma and India theatre. He completed coursework at Wittenberg College, Springfield, OH as preparation for officer training.
Bill came back to the US after the war and decided he did not want to work in the factories so he found a job at National Cash Register where he found his calling as a salesman. He later moved to the west coast and became a diamond salesman. He was an avid hunter and deep sea fisherman, frequently doing both with his sales buddies and clients, and would love to go to Acapulco for month in December and waterski. He and Helen had Kitty and Kelly where they lived in Seattle, Washington, and the San Francisco Bay area.
Bill later met and married Frances Goulding from Liverpool England and they settled in San Diego in 1959 where Bill started his business Bill Moore Vinyl Productions, selling Telephone Directory Covers which he did all over California. He had a office from the early 60’s until 1983 at the Layfette Hotel where the Chargers first had their office in San Diego. In 1983 he bought a building in the Kearny Mesa area and began producing Glo in the Dark telephone stickers which were sold nationwide, and eventually into all specialty advertising products. He continued working until he sold the business to Pat & Joanie in 2007 but did not really retire, continuing to come up with endless marketing schemes.
He loved golf from an early age and it stayed with him all his life, you could be sure to find him sitting in his recliner with the Golf Channel on in his later years. He loved the Chargers and Padres and had season tickets for many years, watching the Chargers play while with his family on Sundays until very recently.
Bill went to mass every morning for years at St. Columba Catholic Church, where he sent his kids to school, passing on his deep faith to his children. He loved to walk and go to the YMCA. After Fran passed away in 2002 he spent the weekends with his kids, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Bill is survived and missed by his four children: daughter Kitty Wicklund of Jamul, CA and son-in-law Jim, Kelly Moore of Gaston, IN and daughter-in-law Rita, Patricia Moore and Joanie Moore Coudding and son-in-law Shane. His grandchildren Jenny Wicklund and Brian Wicklund (wife Melissa), Katelyn Harrison and (husband John), Nathanial Moore (wife Hanah), and Sarah Coudding and Seth Coudding. Great grandchildren Trenton Wicklund and Trey Friebe, and Weston and Logan Wicklund, and Trip and Raegan Harrison. His nephew Michael Moore of Traverse City and New York City, his nieces Anne Moore , Veronica Moore, Mollie Koziorowski, Marijo Rosevear, Sandra Ducharme, Linda Keenum and Mary Ann Kidd; nephews, Joe Doherty, Neil Doherty, Tom Doherty, Terry Doherty and many others.
