William A. Smirniotis, 69, was born into eternity from his home in San Diego on January 5, just weeks after a cancer diagnosis. At his side were his beloved wife of 48 years, Kathleen (nee Nichols), and their children Daniel (Alicia Ritter), Colette (Mark Olsen), and Mark (Aki Braun).
Bill and Kathleen dated during high school in Oak Lawn, IL, married in 1972, and raised their family in Naperville, IL for 30 years. Their long marriage was blessed with happiness and
prosperity, and filled with love and laughter. Bill will be remembered for the kindness and charm he gave freely, the faith he held firmly, and the dedication to his family that he showed daily—plus the thousands of Christmas cookies, delicious meals, and jokes he made. In
addition to his long career in financial services, he worked as a business manager for Catholic parishes, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and served in the US Army Reserve. He will be missed dearly by Kathleen, his children and their spouses; his grandson Henry; his brother Donald (Jane nee Kearns); his seven nieces, and all of the extended family and friends that knew and loved him.
An outdoor funeral mass will be celebrated on January 14 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic church in San Diego, followed by private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial donations be made in his name to the Knights of Columbus Charities (https://www.kofc.org/donate) or the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation (https://mtrp.networkforgood.com).
